Dwell time glossary definition

Dwell time refers to the amount of time a searcher spends on a Web page after clicking a search result before returning to the search engine results page (SERP). It is related to time on page, although the two concepts measure different aspects of user behaviour.

How is dwell time measured?

Dwell time specifically relates to the user's behaviour between visiting a page from a search engine and returning to the search results. Website owners generally cannot measure this exact behaviour directly through standard Web analytics tools.

Time on page, on the other hand, is an analytics metric used to estimate how long a visitor views or interacts with a particular page. In Google Analytics 4 (GA4), engagement time provides information about how long a Web page is actively in the foreground of the user's browser.

Why is dwell time important?

Dwell time can provide context about whether visitors engage with a page after finding it through a search engine. However, a short dwell time is not necessarily negative: a user may find the answer they need within a few seconds, while a detailed article may naturally require several minutes to read.

In summary, dwell time describes how long a searcher remains on a page before returning to the search results, while time on page measures how long users spend viewing or interacting with a page.
