iOS 9 Update

iOS 9 Update

Thursday, November 5, 2015

With this new update, new gadgets have been added to your phones and tablets. What? You didn't see the update? Go download it directly in your Settings. Since this update is much smaller than the previous one, you should be able to download it without needing to delete any application to make some room for it. Otherwise, you can always temporarily delete applications and re-install them after the update.

Here's what's new in iOS9.

Lots of changes in applications

Maps: Support for public transportation in som cities (view the 'Transit' section for a list of available cities), including a list of attractions / shops / restaurants nearby as well as the possibility to enter your home and/or work address.

Notes: You can nos add photos or videos in your notes, create checklists, make drafts and share a note.

Websites: It's now much easier to display the 'desktop version' of a website if you don't like the mobile one.

Wallet: A new application allowing you to make some payments online.

Of course, there are more changes than these since this isn't a complete list, just a list of what we consider the more important ones.

A more advanced search engine called Spotlight

This search engine allows you to not only search for something but you can now do a wide range of additional actions.

You can search for a service or content without opening the application, call someone without opening your contacts or even write, calculate stuff and get the weather quickly.

Tip: Spotlight also displays your top 4 contacts with whom you interact the most.

Siri

You can ask her alot more questions!

You can now ask her context-specific requests. For example: « Siri, can you find the pictures I took at Kimberley's birthday? » or ask her to find the nearest chinese restaurant.

Siri can also help you remember stuff. You can ask her to remind you to do something at a specific time, or when you arrive a a specific place (thanks GPS!). For example, you could ask her to remind you to go do the groceries next time you're in your car, or ask her to set your alarm for 7:00 am tomorrow morning.

Here's a list of what you can ask Siri.

Must try: Did you know you can use Siri to find your soulmate? Watch this video to learn how...

iPad

Multi-task: You can now use a small part of the screen to work on two projects at once, or if you want, you can even split the screen in two and work in 2 applications at the same time. Also, the keyboard has been updated and now allows you to select text.

Bonuses:

  • Easy transfer from Android to iPhone

It's going to be much easier to transfer your data, contacts, photos, etc.

Of course, they don't mention if doing the opposite is going to be as easy, but I doubt Apple's working on that...

  • More options via your Settings or Parameters

Updated password

If you want to change your password, you'll now have to pick one that's 6 numbers long instead of only 4. It just makes everything more secure.

Reduce battery consumption

You can manually reduce battery consumption. It's easy to see which applications drains the battery the most so you can act accordingly.

Activate WiFi

UAn important option for any new user to iOS9. The option is called 'WiFi Assist' and it allows your Internet connexion to be more robust. When it's activated, your phone will automatically use the strongest connexion, even if it's your 3G! So if you have a data plan that's limited in the amount of data you can use, watch out because it's possible you'll bust your plan because of this option. So if that's something that bothers you, you can just de-activate it. But if your plan isn't a problem, lots of users appreciate this option.

So, what do you think is the best iOS9 upgrade?
